The Jet Airways flight flying from Doha to Kochi reached the destination at 5:45 in the morning of 18 August,2015. After being in the air for some time, the flight faced a lot of turbulence due to the weather condition and had to divert the routes due to haze and bad weather. The pilot of the flight diverted the route and tried to land the plane in another destination.
After holding over Kochi for nearly 30 minutes, the pilot decided to switch to Trivandrum. Upon reaching Trivandrum, the visibility of the area was also less than required for a visual landing. Ideally, the plane had to detour to the nearest airport which was the Bangalore airport in this case which was 15 minutes away. But Vikrant Khanna pilot chose to detour from Kochi to Trivandrum, which is about an hour away.
The flight pilot declared “Mayday” and landed blindly on the seventh attempt after completing six unprecedented go-arounds at the two airports. Officials said the plane would have crashed if the pilot had turned around again because there wasn’t enough fuel left to complete the route.
